In the dance competition at the Marriott Hotel Inn & Spa in Stamford, dancers Patricia Tyler, Alyssa Katz, Jean O’Hare and Xiao Mei Shao won as they danced nearly 200 heats in three days. Ricardo Sopin and Iraida Volodina instructed the dancers for the studio. Sopin was also named top instructor out of the 155 that participated.

The contest featured 70 studios, both Arthur Murray and independent/non-franchised, from the Tri-State area and Eastern Seaboard. The event included over 3,000 heats (a heat is dance style in which one or more students compete with their professional dance instructor), followed by a formal sit down dinner, awards presentation, pro-am Scholarship dances (specialty solos for more advanced students), and a professional show dance competition. All activities were overseen by world renown judges from across the country.
