GREENWICH, Conn. — Many shelves in the A&P Fresh Market in Riverside were empty Saturday evening — a rare sight.

A&P Fresh closed its doors in Riverside on Saturday night. Confused customers walked to the store's entrance to find its doors locked Sunday evening.

The store is scheduled to reopen as an Acme Supermarket at 7 a.m. Wednesday, according to a sign in the store’s lobby posted Saturday night.

The store's meat, seafood and dairy section were nearly all empty as of Saturday evening. Baskets normally stocked with freshly baked bread were empty and upended.

The store’s self checkout cash registers were in a roped off section of the parking lot Sunday evening. Inside, employees were seen cleaning up the store.

A fixture in the Riverside Commons shopping center for years, the store's previous iterations included A&P and The Food Emporium.

The sale of 95 A&P-owned stores to Acme and Stop & Shop was approved by a bankruptcy court in White Plains in September.

The sale included 71 stores to Acme for $246 million and 24 to Stop & Shop for $124 million.

Acme is wholly owned subsidiary of Albertsons Inc.
